The Beauty of Boredom

Do you have any idea how difficult it is to be bore nowadays? We have endless TV, constant content online, every activity possible available to us with minimal effort to find, and enough books/audio books to last a lifetime.

Really, it's almost impossible to have nothing to do in a day. Yet, I hear the expression "I'm bored", or, "There's nothing to do", every other day. My thought process behind this isn't the fact that they can't find anything to stimulate their brain with, but rather my mind is baffled by the way they phrase these sentences as complaints.

Have a look at your life, and be completely honest with yourself - if you could write down all the things you had to do - whether it's work, errands around the house, home improvements, spending time with friends, checking out the latest film or finally getting around to washing your car - you'll find that your time isn't as free as you once thought. We have recently been experimenting with Calendar Blocking, and it's been super valuable in how we operate. But I will say, one thing we don't block out is time to do nothing.

I urge you to try and schedule everything you have to do in your life into your calendar. After a few days, you'll find yourself wishing you had more time to do things you wanted, and more often than not, the things you want to do, is nothing. We often crave a sense of alternative. We want to believe the grass is greener on the other side. But is it?

Sitting in a room with nothing to do has a certain beauty to it. It gives you time. It gives you clarity. When you spend your time trying to do, and think, about nothing, you will think about everything. A fresh perspective appears on certain tasks, a new way of looking at things becomes the norm.

If you, like me, feel stuck sometimes because of all the distractions in life, find a quiet place to simply do nothing. Even challenge yourself to see how long you can last doing nothing. When you emerge from your secret hiding place, you will undoubtedly have more energy, more brain power, and more positivity.

Boredom is beautiful. Please don't think otherwise.
