Vertical Chess Set

This chess set is something very personal to me. For those that know me closely, they are aware of my love for the game. But very few people knew that I was trying to build something like this.

​I must confess, the idea for a vertical board didn't originate from myself. In fact, I have no idea where it came from. That being said, I knew as soon as I first saw it that it was something that I wanted to own.

​The idea of the board is to play against someone (or yourself, as I have done countless times) on a long-term basis. For example, if the board is hanging in the hall, a move can be made whenever you walk past. Games can last months depending on how committed each player is. I try and make one move everyday, mainly in the morning before work.

​So after seeing the board online, I decided to build my own instead of simply buying one. It took me around 18 months to complete it, mainly because I kept getting distracted with other things. The board itself was not expensive to build, but the pieces I chose to have were quite costly. Of course, if you'd like to build your own, any pieces will do.
